Is this the best warm-up in the world? I don’t know.. but it is a darn good one. I really don’t even think about stepping on stage without a quick run-through.
This saxophone warm-up is a pattern that will take us through all twelve keys ascending in 1/2 steps. You can download the whole thing written out below, but it should be memorized.
Here is the first key — D major going into the next — Eb major.
The Pattern
- Start with the major scale degrees [1-2-3-4-5-4-3-2]
- lower the [3rd]
- lower the [3rd & 5th]
- lower the [2nd, 3rd, and 5th]
- Last bar play [1-b2-b3-4-b5-b3-1-b6] which in the new key could be thought of as playing the V7 chord [3-4-5-6-7-5-3-1].
- follow the pattern in each new key.

Shooby, Found you while googling sax solos. By any chance do you have Foreigner 4 urgent sax solo, and if so an alto version? Awesome site Scooby6.
Thanks for the comment. I actually haven’t heard that solo before, but it’s kinda cool so i started transcribing it. I put up what i have so far. http://www.matthewschoenebaum.com/urgent-sax-solo-foreigner/
I would put the whole thing up but this has been a pretty busy day and I ran out of time. I’ll try to put the whole thing up in the next couple days if i can.
I’m an alto sax and I think and my siblings think this is an ok warm up but there can be better but I am young so idk
